Winner - Heritage Awards: Landscape

29/05/2025

Our constructed project, Middle Head (Gubbuh Gubbuh to Georges Head) Walking Track, received a Highly Commended Award for Landscape at the 2025 NSW National Trust Heritage Awards last week. It is an honour to see that this project has been recognised and we are proud of the quality workmanship and remarkable effort by our team on this project!

Starting at the historic Beehive Casemates at Georges Head and ending at the Officers’ Quarters at Middle Head, this coastal walk offers wonderful views of Sydney Harbour and a deep connection to our military past. Along the way, visitors can explore carefully preserved WWII-era gun emplacements, fortifications, and defensive ditches.

On behalf of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), our team proudly delivered extensive upgrades including:
• Construction of new sandstone steps, ramps, stairs, and sections of elevated boardwalk
• Creation of new walking track sections through previously unformed areas
• Meticulous restoration and protection of heritage elements, including walls and stairways
• Detailed excavation of the WWII inner defensive ditch, carefully exposing detailed heritage sandstone works
• Improved accessibility, including several new carpark connections

We’re incredibly grateful to the National Trust for this recognition, and privileged to have helped breathe new life into this iconic piece of Sydney’s landscape and history.
